Teacher absenteeism and shirking are common problems in developing countries. The reopening of South African schools for the new academic year has been postponed by two weeks in the wake of rising new covid-19 variant cases. “All stakeholders were united in supporting a delay in the opening of schools. In this review, we examine 145 recent empirical studies (from 2014 onward) on how to increase access to and improve the quality of education across the continent, specifically examining how these studies update previous research findings.
