This brief presents a rapid scan of the current landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, drawing primarily on secondary sources to inform decision-making by policymakers and development partners. It maps the most common AI use cases in education — particularly personalised adaptive learning, curriculum and content development, student support, and institutional administration — and highlights the key actors shaping adoption, including governments, higher education institutions, EdTech companies, and donors. The analysis reveals significant variation across countries, with high-income states advancing national AI strategies and large-scale initiatives, while lower-income and crisis-affected contexts face persistent constraints related to infrastructure, capacity, governance, and equity. The brief identifies critical gaps around teacher readiness, policy coordination, data protection, and sustainability, and outlines opportunities for targeted, evidence-informed action to support inclusive, responsible, and contextually appropriate integration of AI in education across the region.
